No Right To Infringe

If federal background checks on firearms purchases are constitutional, then why are not background checks on ammunition?   Paraphrasing, this was the question asked by Hugh Hewitt on his radio show of January 8, 2013. It’s a good question, and one that deserves an answer. I admit, I had to meditate on it for a few days, like a Zen student. The problem is that it is a trick question. It assumes that ‘federal’ background checks are constitutional.  We usually concede that the federal government has a right to so infringe on the people’s Second Amendment right “to...

Review of “Frack Nation”

Tonight I attended the Los Angeles premier of Phelim McAleer and Ann McElhinney’s much anticipated documentary “Frack Nation”.   The film  was self-funded through Kickstarter.  Phelim and Ann raised over $210,000 from individual donors to make it, and it appears their money was put to very good use.     Why do I say “much anticipated”?  The donors who helped make this film understand what most people who have been following this story also understand.  The United States is sitting on enormous reserves of oil and natural gas that have the potential to power our economy well into...

The product of intense multi-disciplinary study and a brutal two hour daily exercise regimen,...

Self-Worth and the Hookup Culture

Part of restoring our society and our Republic will have to come through a conservative takeover in the culture.   We will have to engage the culture and leave our imprint. It’s not enough to complain about the rot that we see around us; we have to be willing to take it on, make our case, and especially with young people, engage in the conversation. That brings me to Counter Cultured. It describes itself as “a blog about social, political and cultural issues from the perspectives of young conservatives.” This is conservatism taking its place in American culture. And...
