Vietnam Vets Deserve A Better Place in History

Vietnam Vets Deserve A Better Place in History

By Rich Botkin   Thirty eight years ago today the war in Vietnam, for Americans, came to its inglorious, ignominious official conclusion.   For many millions of freedom-loving Vietnamese left behind, the end of the ‘American War’ would simply be prelude into a longer, near-endless period of darkness and suffering. Those of us old enough to recall the date April 30, 1975 will forever remember those final newscasts from a Saigon being overwhelmed by invading North Vietnamese infantry and armor, images of multitudes futilely attempting to join the American exodus, shots of US Navy ships steaming offshore crowded with refugees and flight decks awash in helicopters being pitched into the abyss of the South China Sea; the sinking aircraft metaphor to many for the tremendous waste of American blood and treasure. And since that dark sunset on that day the wounds that were the Vietnam War would never quite heal or be remembered in proper perspective. Assessing the situation years later it was a long-retired and partially publicly-restored...

CLA Radio 05/03/13: Muscle Shoals/Memphis/George Jones

CLA Radio 05/03/13: Muscle Shoals/Memphis/George Jones

The next ConservativeLA Radio show (on Duane FM in the Hughniverse, Friday, 05/03/13, 7:00 Pacific/10:00 Eastern) will be broken out into three segments: The Muscle Shoals Sound Sun Records and Memphis Soul George Jones Speaking of the late, great George Jones, here’s my brief tribute:   George Jones passed away [April 26] in Nashville at the age of 81. Waylon Jennings, himself one of the greatest country artists ever, was not exaggerating when he said, “If we all could sound the way we wanted, we’d all sound like George Jones.” Much ink will be spilled praising The Possum. And what passes nowadays for country radio might even play a bit of his music for a change. Real country music is not dead, but it suffered a painful body-blow today. Those of us who love real country music all have our favorites, and artists that we consider the most important historically; but to my mind, the most transcendentally important figures in country music were Hank Williams (Sr., obviously), Johnny...

Mark Kelly Shoots Himself in the Foot

Mark Kelly Shoots Himself in the Foot

[The author sat down and interviewed his friend, Mike Shoop]   If Mark Kelly really meant to prove how easy it is to buy a gun, he picked the wrong time and place to do so, in Tucson at Diamondback Police Supply, with Mike Shoop behind the counter.   The story was first reported by Breitbart News , which also visited Diamondback for confirmation. I spoke with Mike about it recently. In February, Mark Kelly tried to purchase a Sig Sauer 1911, a .45 caliber pistol, with a Texas ID. Mike had to turn him down. “That’s the first question I asked him,” Mike told me. “Do you have an Arizona driver’s license with your current residential address?” No, he didn’t.  Then, on March 5th, Kelly returned with an Arizona driver’s license to complete the purchase. That day, he also purchased an AR-15. Shortly thereafter, Guns & Patriots editor, Neil W. McCabe, learned about this from “sources,” as he tweeted me. On March 6th, McCabe contacted Kelly’s gun...
