Social Conservatism and the Public Square

Social Conservatism and the Public Square

By Glenn Fairman   If you believe that America can successfully sever social from fiscal conservatism and call the resulting abomination some species of prudent constitutionalism, then you, my friends, are gravely mistaken. By attempting to do so, we prove that we have profoundly misunderstood the moral-political implications of our Founding, which emanated by way of the “god of nature or nature’s god” and were aimed towards the enlightened ends of life, liberty, and happiness. As we speak, the Right is being cunningly tempted by the lure of their well-intentioned brethren who propose an individualist’s ethical fiction and generalize its enticing fancy into the public square. Yet, if statecraft is synonymous with soulcraft, then dismembering virtue from the commonwealth will have astonishing repercussions down the road for both the American regime and for its people’s moral excellence. Social Conservatives believe that we are far more than just calculating material beings. Whether we trace our moral-intellectual roots from Adam or Aristotle, we are deemed rational creatures capable of attaining the...

Bumper-Sticker Beatdown

Bumper-Sticker Beatdown

So I’m driving along, minding my own business, when suddenly a lib pulls in front of me, and assaults my senses with senseless bumper-stickers. Of course, one isn’t enough – they have to lecture me on a half-dozen points to prove how self-righteously intellectual they are, how their secular state-ism is better than my Judeo-Christian constitutional federalism. Progressive infringers! Snarky little twerps. Conservatives don’t have many bumper stickers; mostly flags, NRA stickers, or insignias of military service. I wonder why. Maybe it’s because conservatives actually practice more than preach. It must be nice for liberals to have a catchy comeback for every appeal to reason. COEXIST: What! Like we don’t? Who on earth does this appeal to? Except for the Islamists and the militant homosexuals – and the STRAW MAN impugned by this bumper sticker – most of us certainly do! I think this must be a membership card to a secret cult – “the A-Holy Order of Prius Owners.” War is NOT the answer: Oh no? You mean...

Why Do We Celebrate Easter?

Why Do We Celebrate Easter?

Today is Easter Sunday, the most important day on the Christian calendar because it’s the most important day in history.   Why, you ask? Because it’s the day Jesus Christ arose from the grave. It’s the day He conquered sin and the grave. And it’s the day that proved to the world that Jesus is the Son of God. If you didn’t believe that He is the Messiah after all of the miracles, how about the fact that He was killed in the most humiliating way possible, on a cross, naked for all to see, only to rise again on the third day? He told His disciples that He would be crucified and would rise again on the third day. He foretold of Judas’ betrayal and Peter’s three-fold denial of Him in the lead up to the crucifixion. And then of course, the fact that Jesus made Himself known after the Resurrection to those who who did not believe Him beforehand should be a huge tipoff. He showed off...
